On our first visit to Hamburg we spent lots of time in public. We were shopping, visiting in coffee shops and public malls, riding trains and buses, and meeting people. We found our work to learn some basic German was really helpful. Germans are very warm when approached in their language. And when it ran out, they were surprised we were from America. And the conversations continued.
We are planning on focusing on German Language Study for the first year. The stronger we can speak and listen, the more easily we can function in Germany. Our goal is to be able to have daily conversations, get to know our neighbors, and use German to begin making friendships with the migrant community in Hamburg too.
